Thanks, Curt. Your school seems to be living the multiple device reality. Until such time as we have holographic interfaces that can be as large or as small as we need we continue to be constrained by the form factor of physical objects. Some things are simply better at certain uses. There is no magic bullet, and won't be in my lifetime. And sometimes we need to settle for simply "good enough."

Steve,

As always, you have hit the nail right on the head. I've moved ahead with iPads in our lowest grades where they are clearly a better fit than laptop or desktop computers and the kind of instruction we do (this based on many years of teaching young kids and looking for good ways to ). While the iPad does some lovely things for consumers, it is not a manageable enough platform to be a sustainable option for the enterprise. I have been truly stunned at the speed and scope with which my peers at other schools have jumped down Apple's rabbit hole (don't get me started on Apple TVs).

Apple has made it very clear that its long term interests do NOT include education, at least not unless we all want to double up as you've observed. Our school is well resourced, and always has been, but no school I know has seen a bump of 30% on its hardware budget. I'll continue to fund our initiative with younger kids, but for our older kids, all the workarounds and limitations are just not worth the added expense.
